Artist Statement

Being both a biologist and an artist, I find watercolor painting to be an invaluable means to discover and learn more about the world around me. Taking a subject that initially seems simple and then enlivening it with detail teaches me about my subject on both an artistic and scientific level. I enjoy exploring how light and dark spaces in addition to color can enhance the distinctiveness of my subject. Maintaining a vivid and glowing quality to my work is always foremost in mind because this adds vibrancy and realism to my subjects.

My current work reflects my study of Chinese brushstroke painting and composition. As I incorporate these ancient techniques into my own watercolor style, the resulting pieces are an engaging combination of simplicity and intricacy. Besides Chinese ink, I am also using other media within my watercolor paintings, including gold leaf, metallic watercolor paint, and a variety of watercolor surfaces.
